HELEN PREPARES FOR HER FIRST COMBAT

HELEN FTDS 25th March

With such a successful trackday to shake the car down I'm left with only the minor repairs to attend to, none of them major.

Wheel bearing swapped, and what clumsy-handed halfwit was in here before me? I'm not exactly mechanically-minded, but the hub is rammed solid with grease that’s baked itself into chocolate, the surfaces the bearings butt up to are burred and uneven, it doesn't seem right to me!

New discs fitted, new pads arrive to match, and the front end is completed again. Tow strap fixed, it had been dragging and become frayed so that was swapped and better secured.

Last bit of the interior electrics was sorted, I forgot to connect the supply to the washer bottle, class D regs require it work you know. Spirit of the regulations and all that.

New wheels from Chris Robinson Jaguar Spares, given a quick flick of paint, and 4 new Toyos currently being scrubbed to fit, the open spoke design should improve the god-awful brake cooling and allow the car to stop more consistently and safely.

My request for class D and F cars to be allowed the class E and G cars’ new 3" hole in the inner wings was declined. I viewed it as a safety issue, and a class D car eating brake discs every other meeting is not exactly the low-cost motorsport we’re aiming for, but anyway, the answer was a "no" so I have to buy wheels. Low cost racing my eye.

The new wheels make the old Speedlines a little redundant, which is a pity as I have 4 sets, all with very-nearly or completely rubber-ducked tyres on.

Brake servo changed for a spare second-hand type, hope that does the job. Rear brake pads are not worn enough to say how long they have been in the car. The rear brakes are clearly not doing enough work. As a class D car the only thing I can play with is pad material, I shall have to experiment.

With the jobs complete, she’s ready to race, two days in hand. That’s the earliest I’ve ever been ready for a race meeting, ever. Which means I now need to look at developing the car further. Clearly. Might have a beer first though.

No tyres due a problem at the scrubbers, so I’ll be racing on the same screwed rubber I’ve been on since last August. Never mind, tyres are a luxury anyway!

Injury of the week – aluminium sheet lacerations, for once it’s a low-pain week.

Most-played in the garage – Avril Lavigne, go on, wring out that angst. But it’s kinda catchy.

Random helper of the week – nobody, back to just me again.
